This week saw yet more rivalry between Harry and Raf as Harry tried to decide on what area of surgery he was going to specialise in after seeing Raf being interviewed for a magazine.
At first, Harry seemed to struggle in choosing what he wanted to do; that was until an overweight patient arrived on the ward. The patient, a young girl called Annie, had been admitted onto AAU after hitting her head on her freezer and Harry was charged with looking after her. After talking to Annie for a little bit (and her thinking that he 'liked' her just because he was 'nice' towards her), he found out she was actually due to have a gastric band fitted but that she was worried she wouldn't be eligible after breaking her pre-op diet.
So Harry being Harry saw an opportunity to make himself look good whilst possibly showing Raf up and decided that specialising in bariatric surgery was going to be his thing. Harry got on the phone to Annie's surgeon and was able to talk his way into sitting in on one of her consultations. Once he had convinced the surgeon that this is what he really wanted to do he went about trying to a) find an operating theatre (apparently because of Annie's accident they'd lost the theatre slot) and b) try to convince Guy to allow more surgery to take place at Holby.
After realising that the operating theatre was no longer available, Harry found out that, miraculously, the theatre in AAU was free which meant Annie's surgery could take place as scheduled much to Harry's delight. However, when Raf found out that the theatre was in use (he had a patient (who actually started out as Harry's but he abandoned her when he thought she had a 'simple' leg ulcer) who needed an urgent operation), he wasn't very happy. So he took this up with Guy which resulted in them (publicly) having an argument which resulted in Harry smiling smugly to himself.
I can see the rivalry storyline between Harry and Raf continuing for the foreseeable future, but I think as well as it bringing out the worst in Harry, it will also bring out the best in both doctors and I think they'll end up, learning a lot from each other and possibly becoming (dare I say it) friends; or if they don't become friends, they'll end up respecting each other.
I know this review is again just focusing on AAU but a lot happened elsewhere in the hospital too so I'd love to hear your thoughts on the episode.......
