Wow! So after week's of barley any Dr T action, we finally got a whole episode that was Harrycentric and boy what a good one it was!!
It started off with Harry being his usual cocky self and taking the mickey out of Arthur (poor Digby); he then wound Ric up the wrong way by declining to take part in what Harry thought would be just a 'standard' appendectomy (turns out this particular procedure would involve a laser!) As punishment, Ric gave Harry a lot of paperwork to deal with - much to the delight of Mary-Claire ("it's like you're Ric's secretary or something. You'll be picking up his dry cleaning next!"). But then the subject of the episode arrived and all hell broke loose. At first no-one knew what was embedded in the poor lads chest and Harry was dispatched by Ric (much to Harry's disgust) to speak to the family member who had come in with the patient to see if he could find out what it was ("Hand holding?! Can't Mary-Claire do that?!")
Just as Ric was about to remove the object from the patients chest Harry bursts into the theatre to tell them that what they are about to remove is a live rocket flare that could explode at any minute. AAU is cleared of all patients except for the poor patient who is left hooked up to a ventilator with very little hope of survival. Hanssen makes the decision to not allow life saving measures to be taken if the boy goes into cardiac arrest; this riles Harry into making a decision that could end his career; he decides to take the brother to go and say goodbye with Gemma chasing after him trying to stop him. Then would you believe it, whilst the brother was saying goodbye, the patient went into heart failure leading to Harry to start chest compression's whilst telling the brother to get out; Gemma, on the other hand, went to go and find Ric who, along with the soldier, didn't look too happy with Harry.
There was nothing else to do other than Ric performing an operation to remove the explosive, especially as Harry had stupidly decided to stick his hand in the patients chest to try and stem a bleed which led to his having his hand on the device!! The look of absolute panic on Harry's face made it quite scary to watch (I know, I know, it's only a TV show) and at one point, his petrified face made me want to climb into the TV to give him a big hug!! Once all the drama was over, it was time to face the music; not only did he have to face Serena (accompanied by Ric, Edward and Mr Soldier) but he also had to face the wrath of Hanssen too. At the end of the episode we found out that whilst he was given an official warning (which stays on his record), he was actually saved from being given his P45 by Ric who stood up for him (the speech from Edward in theatre "we were all like Harry once" must have helped!) And with a final exchange between Harry and Ric about the postponed appendectomy ("I've proved myself now, can I scrub in?" "No") it ended with Harry walking off into the distance with his trademark cocky grin on his face.
Not much else went on in this episode; Digby had a panic attack after letting the pressure of trying to impress Hanssen get to him which led to him mis-diagnosing a patient. On Darwin, we saw 2 very cute puppies (Gary and Mark were their names due to the owner liking Take That "even without Robbie") being bought on as the nephew of a heart patient came to say goodbye. And by pure coincidence, puppy Gary needed a new home; at first Elliot was reluctant to take on a new dog so soon after losing Sampson, but he was soon won round by the cuteness of the puppy. This particular story line was added in as a bit of light relief from all the drama on AAU and very welcome it was too.
So, that's my thoughts on the episode, long and rambling as they were. Now let's see what you have to say.....
