It is actually only two weeks since I wrote about the lovely Blake song "Start Over", yet here I am again reporting on their next single, Beautiful Night. There is definitely something about the group that just resonates - and it may well be their ability to create music that transcends trends & genres, focusing on uplifting the listener with elegant melodies, sumptuous harmonies and beautiful vocals. Whatever type of music dominates the top 40, these are songs that people will want to return to again and again - weaving themselves into the fabric and emotion of every day life. Beautiful Night is the perfect example of this - the opening piano/vocal only intro is a joy to listen to despite the wistful nature of the lyrics, mixing musical theatre with traditional pop values. As the drum beat, sweeping strings and harmonies join in, the song is delightfully layered with the pulsing heart of the song that flows with elegiac undertones into a chorus so fueled with hope & optimism that you have no choice but to succumb to the heavenly sentiments. It's also a little 70s ELO/Elton John inspired which gives it a gorgeous retro feel - almost like listening to a modern day Bee Gees song. The video is a genuine treat - showing how the boys love of performing shines through into their delivery of the song. It's made that little bit more poignant knowing that Jules is leaving the group to star in Holby City (though I bet he looks amazing in scrubs...) but Blake are nothing but resiliant & their star will going on shining regardless. The wait for the new album is now almost intolerable Roll on 11th Feb
