The bears that became our buddies: It's one of those great British eccentricities- the childhood teddy bear that becomes a friend for life. So we asked seven celebrities to bear all about their favourite teddies...
Everybody remembers their first teddy bear – and for many of us, they remain a source of comfort and companionship well into adult life. ‘I nearly drowned Rory in the pool!’
I was five and on holiday at the Knoll House Hotel in Studland Bay, Dorset, with my parents when I spotted this sad-looking bear in the hotel shop window. He had tiny little eyes and a floppy golden body, and looked as if he’d nodded off while waiting for someone to love him.
After hours of nagging my parents we visited the shop and he was mine. I called him Rory and took him everywhere – I even had the bright idea of taking him swimming in the hotel pool. Luckily, after drying out on the radiator he lived to fight another day. He slept in my bed at boarding school until I was about 15, when my sisters persuaded me it was time I slept alone. He still sits on top of my wardrobe and he’s still in pretty good nick. In fact, he barely looks a day older – unlike his owner.
