The Blake singer turned Holby City actor chats about his former university pals...
Until recently, Jules Knight was most famous for being the founding member of Blake. But the 31 year old shocked fans by leaving the male vocal group in January to join the cast of Holby City as sexy new doctor Harry Tressler.
In another claim to fame, Jules was pals with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the University of St Andrews - and he once revealed how, during their student days, he and Prince William jumped into a fountain!
Jules reckons the royal couple will make "fantastic" parents, telling us, "They're lovely people and I'm very happy for them that Kate's pregnant."
But the singer turned actor won't be following them down the aisle yet. After briefly dating former Hollyoaks actress Ciara Janson, 26, in 2010, he's now "hopelessly" single and worried about being left on the shelf. If his sense of humour and good looks are anything to go by, he's unlikely to be on his own for long.
Here, he tells new! about quitting Blake, becoming an actor and the kind of girl who makes him go weak at the knees...
So why did you decide to leave Blake to join Holby City?
It was a big deal to leave Blake, but I've always wanted to be an actor. When I left drama school in 2006, I didn't leave thinking I wanted to be in a band, but Blake started six months later. We were offered a fantastic opportunity and I thought it was a great thing to do.
What did the other boys say when you told them?
It was difficult. We spent six years together and were extremely close. When one person leaves, it's always personal, even if it isn't. There's an element of disappointment and it's taken hard because people fidn it very difficult to understand that you want to go and do something else. But having said that, the boys knew I wanted to act, so it wasn't a major shock to them. After a few weeks, they understood.
Are they still speaking to you?
We're still good friends. They're carrying on and doing well. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that musically it has worked out pretty well as a three-piece, and they're not planning to replace me.
Are you enjoying acting?
I love it. When I was in a band, there was very little structure. Now I get up at 5am and return at 9pm, but I like the routine. I also love having my weekends back. I can go out with my friends and have a normal life again.
You've already be labelled "Holby's dishy new doctor". How do you feel about that?
[Laughs] It's very flattering. It feels quite weird as the show hasn't really aired yet with me in it, so knows what it will be like. But it's very nice.
What would your dream acting role be?
I think everyone wants to be in Downton Abbey. I also love Foyle's War. But I'll go where the work is. I'm very happy where I am at the moment.
Would you ever do reality TV?
I'm not sure. I find some of the shows like TOWIE a bit weird. I don't understand why these people are suddenly millionaires. I love the idea of show business being how it used to be. But I do admire people who do Strictly Come Dancing or Dancing on Ice. If I were to do something, I would be open to either of these shows.
You dated former Hollyoaks actress Ciara Janson in 2010. How long were you together for?
We went out for five or six months. She's now a very good friend. We had a great time, but we decided we were better off as friends. She's great and I love her to bits.
Have you met anyone else since then?
I'm single. Hopelessly single. I'm slightly worried. I heard the expression "doing a George Clooney", where you end up never settling down. I'm 31 and I would love to be with someone, but it's got to be the right person.
What's your type?
I need to laugh with someone and I want them to have a good sense of humour, but, yeah, looks are important. I want to be with someone I'm attracted to. It's getting that combination which is a tough thing.
You famously went to university with Kate and Wills...
I did, but we've all grown apart over the years. I haven't had that much contact with them [since we left], but we were good friends at university. They are lovely people and I'm very happy for them that Kate's pregnant. I think they'll be fantastic parents. They are very good for the county, for the monarchy and they are fantastic as a couple.
