While Malick faces difficult dilemmas treating a convicted killer, there's some light relief as handsome doctor Harry Tressler walks onto the wards this week. He's played by Jules Knight, who's best known for being in the classical pop band Blake.
'Harry is very talented and good with people,' says Jules, 31. 'But he can be manipulative and arrogant. He loves to fool around, and has an eye for the ladies.'
Harry leaves Gemma bemused, but Mary-Claire seems delighted with his flirtatious banter.
'I think he enjoys playing games with different people at the same time,' says Jules.
'When I received the character breakdown, I emailed my agent and said, "He's quite like me, isn't he?" But I meant in terms of the background and the relationship with his father. Various things just resonated with me.'
Jules performed with operatic pop band Blake from 2007 until he quit earlier this year to start filming on Holby City. 'About half way through the last six years, I was really starting to miss acting quite a lot - which is something I've done since about the age of 13,' he says.
He hasn't completely rested his vocal chords, however, because he sometimes breaks into song with other cast members during breaks.
'It makes it a bit of fun. I hasten to add that not everyone starts singing, just an annoying core of which I seem to have fallen into.'
Before he travelled the world with Blake, Jules went to drama school and then also studied at St Andrews University at the same time as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.
'We were part of a big group of friends - and, to be honest, they were no different from anyone else. They were down to earth and charming, and I'm pleased to have known them. I'm glad they're married and think they'll be great parents.'
